Garnet

Tucked into Granite County, Montana, Garnet is a preserved ghost town with roots in the gold mining boom of the 1890s. At its peak the settlement drew workers and businesses to support the hard rock mines operating in the area, but as those mines shuttered, the population steadily drained away and the town was left behind.

What remains today has been kept intact rather than left to fully decay, and visitors can walk through surviving structures that give a genuine sense of the place's former life. The Bureau of Land Management oversees the site and keeps it open to the public.

Reaching Garnet demands a capable vehicle — four-wheel drive is required, and the access road is not suitable for standard passenger cars. Plan accordingly, and expect the route to be impassable or hazardous during winter months and early spring when snow and mud dominate the terrain. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable window for a visit.
