Eckley

Eckley is a ghost town in Contra Costa County, California, that once functioned as a train-ferry landing on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Before a permanent railroad bridge crossed the Carquinez Strait, trains relied on this small landing to make the water crossing. Situated at just 10 feet of elevation and roughly 4.5 miles northwest of Martinez, the site connected rail lines on either side of the strait until the Benicia-Martinez railroad bridge rendered it obsolete.

Very little documentation survives about what remains on the ground today. Visitors drawn to the history of California's early rail network may find the quiet waterside setting worth a look, but should expect a minimal physical footprint typical of former railroad service communities.
