Delano

Delano is a ghost town in the far northeastern corner of Elko County, Nevada, roughly 36 miles north of Montello. Its name comes from a local trapper who once worked the area, giving the community a frontier identity that predates any formal settlement.

The town grew as the hub of a small gold-mining district that saw activity stretching from the 1870s all the way into the 1960s — a notably long run for a place this remote. The post office, which had served residents and miners alike, shut its doors in 1927, a reliable signal that the permanent population had largely moved on.

Visitors today will find a classic high-desert ghost town setting. Given its sparse documentation, expect scattered remnants rather than a preserved townsite. The area is best approached with a high-clearance vehicle, and the short window of mild weather in summer and early fall makes those months the practical time to visit. Winter conditions at this latitude in northeastern Nevada can make access difficult or impossible.
