Cuyamaca

Cuyamaca sits in eastern San Diego County, tucked into the western Laguna Mountains between the communities of Descanso to the south and Julian to the north, with the Capitan Grande Reservation lying to its west. The area takes its name from the 1845 Rancho Cuyamaca, a Mexican land grant, and that ranching heritage shaped the landscape long before the region became what it is today.

Today the area is defined almost entirely by Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, a roughly 26,000-acre preserve that encompasses most of the surrounding terrain. Rising within the park is the county's second-highest summit, Cuyamaca Peak, which tops out at 6,512 feet. A small modern community persists on the park's northern edge, though the historic settlement itself has little remaining presence on the ground.

Visitors come primarily for the state park's trails, scenery, and camping rather than ghost-town exploration. The higher elevations mean winters can bring hazardous road and trail conditions, while late spring through early fall offers the most reliable access.
