Coloma

Coloma is a small census-designated community in El Dorado County, California, carrying an outsized place in American history. On January 24, 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill here in the Sierra Nevada foothills, an event that set off the California Gold Rush and reshaped the nation.

Despite its monumental past, Coloma today is a quiet, lightly populated spot — the 2020 census counted just 521 residents — sitting roughly 36 miles northeast of Sacramento. Visitors come primarily to stand where that pivotal discovery happened and to take in the historic setting rather than to find a bustling destination.
