About Colfax

What is now a ghost town in Custer County, Colorado, began its existence as a short-lived communal farming community during the territorial period, when the area was still part of Fremont County, Colorado Territory. The settlement never took lasting hold, and today Colfax stands as an empty remnant of that ambitious but brief experiment in collective agriculture.

Visitors drawn to Colorado's ghost towns will find little documentation on what physical remains, if anything, survive at the site. Given how sparse the historical record is, anyone making a special trip should set expectations accordingly and treat the experience primarily as a scenic and historically reflective outing rather than a destination with guaranteed standing structures.
