About Barthell
Barthell is a former coal town in McCreary County, Kentucky, with roots going back to 1902, when the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company established it as the first of what would eventually become 18 mining camps under that company's development.
Today the site operates as an open-air history museum, giving visitors a chance to walk through what remains of the community and get a tangible sense of early industrial camp life in Kentucky. The museum is open from April through Thanksgiving, so plan your visit within that window.
