About Barnwell
Barnwell is a ghost town in San Bernardino County, California, perched at 4,806 feet in the New York Mountains. It began as a rail camp called Summit, was later known as Manvel, and eventually became a railhead serving nearby mining camps before fading into abandonment.
Visitors today find a largely vanished settlement with little remaining infrastructure. The high desert elevation and remote setting give the site a stark, quiet character that appeals to those interested in California's railroad and mining history.
