Banning

Banning is a ghost town in Sussex County, Delaware, situated at the intersection of Blacksmith Shop Road (Road 44) and Beach Highway (Delaware Route 16). Its existence was tied entirely to the Queen Anne's Railroad, which once ran between Ellendale and Greenwood, with Banning serving as a stop along that corridor within Cedar Creek Hundred.

When the railroad ceased operations and the tracks came down, the land the railroad had occupied reverted to Mark L. Banning, the original landowner from whom the stop had taken its name. The small community that had grown up around the station faded away with it, leaving nothing behind.

Today there is no townsite to explore — Banning exists only as a name on the map and a crossroads. Visitors curious about the spot will find a quiet rural intersection, nothing more.
