Auraria

Tucked in Lumpkin County, Georgia, southwest of Dahlonega, Auraria is a ghost town whose very name points to its past — it comes from aurum, the Latin word for gold. In its earliest years the settlement went by a handful of other names, including Dean, Deans, Nuckollsville, and Scuffle Town, before Auraria became the identity that stuck.

Today the site is a quiet, historically resonant stop rather than a developed attraction. Visitors should arrive with modest expectations: this is a ghost town, and the experience centers on atmosphere and context rather than standing structures or maintained facilities.
