About Athens
Athens is a ghost town in Nye County, Nevada, with a brief but eventful history rooted in mining. A rush in 1910 brought the settlement to life, though it collapsed and was abandoned within that same year.
The town got a second chance when the Warrior mine opened, drawing residents back and sustaining a community all the way through 1939, when mining operations finally shut down for good. Today Athens stands as a quiet remnant of that era, set in the Nevada desert with whatever structural remains the decades have left behind.
Visitors should come prepared for a remote, self-guided experience with no formal amenities. Desert heat makes cooler months the most practical time to explore.
