Alma

Alma is a former community in the southeastern corner of Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, situated east of the town of Lakeland. Though the settlement itself no longer exists as an active community, the land it occupied is far from idle.

The most significant feature standing on the site today is Alma Plantation, the only sugar mill still operating in Pointe Coupee Parish and one of just eleven remaining in the entire state of Louisiana. The mill produces raw sugar and blackstrap molasses, keeping a living thread of agricultural history tied to the place. During sugar cane harvest — known locally as 'the grinding season' — the plantation becomes one of the larger employers in the surrounding area, giving the site a seasonal pulse that few ghost towns can claim.
