About Hemingway-Boulders Wilderness

Hemingway-Boulders Wilderness is a 68,017-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in central Idaho, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry, open only to non-motorized travel—no roads, motors, or mechanized equipment are permitted. This is genuine wilderness: you'll find solitude, rugged terrain, and the responsibility that comes with venturing into untracked country.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the area. There are no maintained facilities, no trail maps provided here, and navigation requires preparation and skill. You're expected to travel lightly, camp minimally, and follow Leave No Trace principles strictly—pack out everything you pack in, camp away from water sources, and leave no trace of your passage. Access is from trailheads on National Forest land surrounding the wilderness boundary; check with the Forest Service for current conditions and entry points.

The best season is summer and early fall, when snow is gone and weather is most stable. Spring and late fall are possible but come with unpredictable conditions. Winter travel requires serious backcountry skills and is hazardous. This is a place for experienced wilderness travelers who understand self-sufficiency, map-and-compass navigation, and the commitment to preserve a truly wild landscape.
