About Great Divide Highway

Great Divide Highway is a 27.2-mile National Forest Scenic Byway in Wisconsin, running through the Great Divide Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The route passes through the town of Clam Lake, and the land along it is managed by the Forest Service. As a drive, the byway covers its full 27.2 miles on the road, making it an easy way to reach the trails, ski routes and lakes clustered near Clam Lake. Summer is the most comfortable time to go: typical averages from a nearby weather station at Clam Lake run to highs around 76°F and lows near 56°F in July, while January highs average about 20°F with lows near 1°F. Forest-wide alerts posted as of October 2026 include a drawdown of Day Lake that was set to begin after Labor Day, along with a forest order on firewood restrictions. These notices cover the entire Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest rather than this road specifically, and they can change. Close to the route are the Mukwonago cross-country ski area and the Mukwonago Ski Trail 2.3 km. Day Lake offers fishing, and the Day Lake Hwt hiking trail is just over a mile away.
