About Spirit Lake Memorial Highway

Spirit Lake Memorial Highway is a 45.9-mile National Forest Scenic Byway in Washington, managed by the Forest Service and also designated a Washington State Scenic Byway. The drive passes through the town of Castle Rock, which makes a natural starting point or supply stop. Summer is the most comfortable time to make the trip. July and August typically bring highs near 80°F and only about five wet days a month, based on typical averages from a nearby weather station in Longview, which sits just 12 feet above sea level, so temperatures higher along the byway run cooler. The route links a cluster of short outings within a fraction of a mile of the road. Hummocks and Winds of Change Trail are both hikes close to the highway, and Birth of a Lake is nearby as well. Paddlers can look to Hoffstadt Creek, which lies just off the route.
