Lake Minnewaska sits inside Minnewaska State Park Preserve in the Shawangunk Ridge, and the climbing here is some of the most accessible and varied in the Northeast. The Gunks, as locals call them, are built on a horizontal quartz conglomerate that produces the range's signature roof-and-crack style, and the 215 listings around Lake Minnewaska reflect that variety well. You'll find pure crack lines like Easy Crack and Bro Crack alongside face routes like Carrot Face and Scoop Face, chimney problems like Cool Cave Chimney, and arete work on Bunk Arete. Bouldering is part of the mix too, with problems like The Diving Board, Mentos, and The Loner Boner spread across the area. Climbing areas are organized into distinct zones, including the Khadejha Area, Little Havana, the Off Limits and Reach Around Walls section, and the Mya to the East End corridor, so it's worth studying the area map before you show up. Routes like Numero Uno and Old Route give newer climbers a foothold, while lines like Detention and Rainy Daze offer more to work with for experienced leaders. The rock is grippy and generally well-featured, but the horizontal nature of the climbing rewards climbers who are comfortable with underclings and liebacking rather than purely vertical movement.
Minnewaska State Park Preserve charges a vehicle entry fee, and that covers access to the climbing areas. The park has specific rules about where climbing is permitted, and some walls have seasonal raptor closures that can affect access to certain zones. Check the New York State Parks website or contact the park directly before your trip to confirm which areas are open, especially in spring.
The area has options across a real range of experience levels. Routes like Easy Crack and Old Route are reasonable starting points for newer leaders comfortable on crack systems, while Numero Uno is another approachable option. More experienced climbers will find plenty to work on across the Khadejha Area, Little Havana, and the Off Limits and Reach Around Walls sections. The Gunks style rewards comfort with horizontal roofs and underclings, so if that movement is new to you, expect a learning curve even on moderate grades.

A standard rack of cams and nuts covers most routes, but the Gunks are famous for their horizontal crack systems, so a good selection of mid-size cams is especially useful. Many routes take gear placements in horizontal breaks rather than vertical cracks. Bring a 60-meter rope at minimum, and double-check whether the routes you're targeting require a single or double rope setup by consulting a current guidebook.
Fall is widely considered the prime season, with dry rock and cooler temperatures that suit the physical style of climbing here. Spring is also popular but comes with the caveat of potential raptor closure zones. Summer climbing is possible but the quartz conglomerate can get slick in humidity, and the park gets busy on weekends. Winter days with dry conditions and freezing temperatures can actually produce excellent friction on the rock.
Both are well represented. The Diving Board, Mentos, RX Do It Over the Counter, and The Loner Boner are among the bouldering problems in the area, and they're spread across different zones rather than concentrated in one spot. Bring a pad and check current area maps to locate the specific bouldering sectors, since some are a walk from the main parking areas.
