About Historic Route 66
Historic Route 66 is a 595.6-mile All-American Road across New Mexico, running through dozens of communities from Tucumcari, San Jon and Santa Rosa in the east to Gallup, Manuelito and Lupton in the west. Along the way it passes through Santa Fe Foothills and La Cienega, Bernalillo, Albuquerque, Tijeras and Moriarty, and south through Isleta, Bosque Farms and Los Lunas. It also crosses the pueblos and villages around Laguna and Acomita, then continues through Grants, Milan, Prewitt and Continental Divide. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to drive. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Cubero show May highs around 78°F with lows near 42°F, and October highs near 70°F with lows around 36°F. Short side trips are easy to add. East Santa Fe Avenue, Deer Trail and Grasshopper Canyon Trail all sit about 0.1 mile from the road, and climbers can stop at Carnuel Crag, about 0.2 mile away.
