About Religious Freedom Byway
Religious Freedom Byway is a 98.7-mile drive across southern Maryland, designated both a National Scenic Byway and a Maryland State Scenic Byway. The route links a string of small communities, passing through Port Tobacco Village, Rock Point, Cobb Island, Leonardtown and Callaway along the way. At nearly 100 miles, the byway works well as a full-day outing, with each town on the route serving as a natural place to break up the trip. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons to drive it. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show October highs around 69°F and May highs around 75°F, while July highs average about 88°F. The byway also makes a good base for getting out of the car. Newport Run, a canoeing route, and Bell Lap Trail, a mountain biking trail, both lie about 0.1 mile from the road. Paddlers can also reach the Wicomico River about half a mile away, and hikers will find Saint Mary's City Nature Trail roughly 0.6 mile off the route.
