About Flint Hills Scenic Byway
The Flint Hills Scenic Byway is a 46.5-mile drive across Kansas, designated both a National Scenic Byway and a Kansas State Scenic Byway. Council Grove sits at one end of the route, which links a string of small towns along the way. From Council Grove, the byway passes through Strong City, Cottonwood Falls and Matfield Green before reaching Cassoday. With five towns spaced along its length, the drive breaks naturally into short stretches, and each community offers a place to stop. Fall is the most comfortable season for the trip. Typical October highs run near 69°F with lows around 45°F, based on averages from a nearby weather station at Council Grove Lake. By contrast, July highs typically reach about 90°F. For time on the water, the South Fork Cottonwood River lies about 2 miles from the route and offers canoeing.
