About Sawtooth Scenic Byway

Sawtooth Scenic Byway is a 115.4-mile drive through Idaho on Forest Service land. It carries two designations, as a National Forest Scenic Byway and as an Idaho State Scenic Byway. The route links a string of towns: Shoshone, Bellevue, Hailey, Sun Valley, Ketchum and Stanley. That makes it easy to break the drive into stages, with places to stop along the way. For the most comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Shoshone, around 3,950 feet, show May highs near 74°F and September highs near 81°F. July and August at that station typically reach the low 90s. Stops close to the road include Sawtooth National Recreation Area and Wood River Campground. Anglers can try the Salmon River near Stanley or the Big Wood River near Ketchum.
