About Northwest Passage Scenic Byway

The Northwest Passage Scenic Byway is a 202.7-mile drive in Idaho, designated both an All-American Road and an Idaho State Scenic Byway. The route links a string of communities, among them Clarkston, Peck, Orofino, Kamiah, Kooskia, Stites and Grangeville, so fuel, food and lodging stops can be planned around those towns along the way. At just over 200 miles, this is a full day behind the wheel or a relaxed multi-day trip, with towns spaced along the road for breaks. Late spring and early fall tend to be the most comfortable times to go. A nearby weather station at Lewiston's airport records typical September highs around 79°F with lows near 52°F, compared with typical July highs around 91°F. Plenty of stops sit right along the road. Anglers can reach the Clearwater River at Orofino, and Pink House Recreation Site, Jerry Johnson Campground and Post Office Ridge Trail #919 all lie within a short distance of the route.
