Riggins sits at the confluence of the Salmon and Little Salmon Rivers in a deep canyon that keeps rock dry and temperatures climbable well into seasons when higher-elevation Idaho crags are buried in snow or soaked with runoff. The canyon walls here host around 50 routes, with the Manning Crevice Bridge Area serving as one of the main anchors for the local climbing scene. The route names alone give you a sense of the vibe — Bitch Magnet, Chicken Choker, Rage Against the Janine — this is not a manicured resort crag. Routes like Slab in the Sky and Salmon River Quiver reflect the terrain: steep canyon rock above a working river corridor, with exposure that earns its name. You'll find enough variety across the 50 active listings to keep intermediate climbers busy for a long weekend, and routes like Flowers and Bunnies or Nubbin' But Fun suggest there's entry-level terrain mixed in alongside the harder sends. The town is small, services are limited, and the approach ethic is low-key. Come with your own beta, a rack suited to canyon sport and trad, and realistic expectations about amenities. What Riggins delivers in return is legitimate desert-canyon climbing with almost no crowds.
Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) are the prime windows. The canyon's low elevation keeps rock accessible when mountain crags are still snowed in, but summer temperatures in the Salmon River Canyon regularly push into the 90s and above, making midday climbing miserable or dangerous. If you visit in summer, plan on early-morning starts and be off the rock by late morning.
The route list includes names that suggest a range of difficulty, from more approachable lines like Flowers and Bunnies and Nubbin' But Fun to routes with harder reputations like Voice of the Voiceless and Soul Harvester. The area is not primarily a beginner destination, but intermediate climbers will find plenty of routes to project. Newer climbers should come with an experienced partner.

Permit requirements can vary depending on which specific wall or access corridor you're using, and land management in the Salmon River Canyon involves a mix of BLM and other jurisdictions. Check current access conditions with the BLM Cottonwood Field Office before your trip, as regulations and trailhead access can change seasonally or after weather events.
Most Riggins routes are sport or mixed canyon climbs, so a standard sport rack with 12 or more quickdraws and a 60-meter rope covers the majority of lines. Some routes may require gear for anchors or crack sections, so review specific route beta on Mountain Project or a current guidebook before you go. Bring more water than you think you need — the canyon is dry and exposed.
The Manning Crevice Bridge Area and most Riggins crags are within a short drive of town along the Salmon River corridor, making Riggins itself a reasonable base. Dispersed camping is available in the canyon on BLM land, and the town has basic lodging and a few restaurants. Cell service is limited in the canyon, so download your maps and route beta before you leave town.
