About Palms to Pines Scenic Byway

Palms to Pines Scenic Byway is a 65.1-mile National Forest Scenic Byway in California, managed by the Forest Service. The route passes through the mountain communities of Idyllwild-Pine Cove and Mountain Center, which make natural stops for fuel, food or a break along the way. For timing, spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in San Jacinto run highs around 74°F in April and 82°F in October. Summer highs there climb into the mid-90s. That station sits at about 1,500 feet, so temperatures along the higher stretches of the byway run cooler. The drive also works as a starting point for time on foot or on rock. Deer Springs and Palm Canyon are hikes right off the route. Prospect Wall offers climbing close by, and Fern Basin is a campground less than half a mile away for anyone who wants to stay overnight.
