For bouldering at Cedar Grove Boulders, Building Blocks, or Zumwalt Boulder Arete, a crash pad, shoes, and a brush are sufficient.

The bigger ridge and face routes on the Painted Lady or the Golden Bear Tower are better suited to climbers with alpine trad experience who are comfortable with route-finding and longer days.
Highway 180 is the main road into Kings Canyon and leads to Cedar Grove, which serves as the practical base for most of the climbing in this zone. The road to Cedar Grove typically closes in winter and reopens in late spring, so confirm current road status with the park before planning an early-season trip. Some of the higher-elevation objectives involve significant trail approaches, and parking at Cedar Grove can fill early on summer weekends, so aim to arrive before 8 a.m.
