Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is a public ocean beach on the California coast, within the San Luis Obispo Unit and about 2.4 miles from the town of Callender. Swimming is allowed, and lifeguards are on duty. The beach has restrooms and accessible access, dogs are welcome, and a fee is charged. The beach is mild year-round. Late summer through fall is the most comfortable stretch, when typical averages at the nearby Pismo Beach weather station reach highs in the low 70s °F, peaking around 73 °F in October, with only one or two wet days a month from June through September. For time away from the sand, the Lagoon Trail is about 4.2 miles away, and the James Way Trail and Picacho Summit Trail are both around 6 miles out. Paddlers can head to the Santa Maria River, about 7 miles away.
