About this program

We have beavers in the Park that have built a well-developed dam along Basin Creek. Stop by to chat with a Park Ranger beside the Doughton Park Visitor Center to see taxidermized beavers and to learn about the beaver's physical and lifestyle adaptations to being semi-aquatic mammals.

At 3:45, there will be a .75 mile guided walk from the trailhead of the Grassy Gap Fire Road to see the dam and habitat along the creek before walking back to the trailhead.

To get to the trailhead, take Highway 18 from milepost 248 and go 6.2 miles south down Highway 18 towards North Wilkesboro. Turn left onto Longbottom Road and go 7 miles. Meet in the gravel parking area on the right across from the trailhead. Look for the parking area once you drive over the small bridge. Guided hike will be canceled if it rains.
