Kading Cabin

Kading Cabin is located in an area of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest that was a part of the original Helena Forest Reserve established in 1906. Although the cabin is not located in an isolated setting, during the summer and fall, one can still escape the fast pace of town. There is plenty of hiking, fishing, wildlife and wildflower viewing to be had along the numerous trails and roads that can be accessed within a short distance from the cabin. For mining history buffs, there are plenty of historic mines,including the Charter Oak Mine/Mill and the Monarch Mine.During the winter months, the Little Blackfoot Road is only plowed as far as Hat Creek. Normally, a turn-around and parking area are provided. Approximately 7 miles of unplowed road remain to reach the cabin. This section of road is closed to vehicles but open to those who like to ski, snowmobile or use dog sleds.The cabin has four beds with mattresses, a table and four chairs, cabinets, drawers, a woodstove and cook stove. A water spigot is located outside the cabin and operates most of the winter. Also available are gas lanterns, silverware, dishes, cooking utensils, pots and pans, firewood, axe, shovel, outhouse and cleaning supplies. Bring your own drinking water (in the winter months), sleeping bags, warm clothes, food, propane fuel for Coleman lantern and stove, and a flashlight.
