About Grassy Knob Wilderness

Grassy Knob Wilderness is a 17,176-acre federally protected wilderness area in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized landscape where solitude and self-reliance are core to the experience.

The wilderness follows strict federal protections: no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must travel on foot and practice Leave No Trace principles—pack out all waste, camp away from water sources, and minimize impact on the land. This is true backcountry, requiring navigation skills, proper preparation, and respect for the wilderness character.

Access is on foot only, and seasonal conditions vary; spring and early summer can bring wet trails and snow at higher elevations, while fall offers stable conditions and lower water crossings. Plan accordingly and check current conditions with the Forest Service before heading out.
