Summer heat in southwest Texas is serious, and midday temperatures regularly push well past 100°F, making early morning starts the only practical option if you climb in summer at all. Winter can offer good conditions on sunny days but cold snaps and wind are real factors.
The area has options across a range of grades, including more accessible routes like Easy Bake and moderate lines alongside harder climbs like Hanging Judge and the listed 5.11 routes. That said, the remote desert setting means even easier routes carry more consequence than a well-trafficked crag closer to a city -- you should be comfortable with route-finding, self-rescue basics, and managing heat and water. This is not an ideal first outdoor climbing experience.

The routes here are predominantly limestone sport climbing, so a standard sport rack -- quickdraws, a 60-meter rope, and a belay device -- covers most lines. The Shaded Cave Traverse is a bouldering problem, so crash pads are worth considering if that's on your list. Bring significantly more water than you think you need; there are no reliable water sources at the crags, and the desert environment will dehydrate you faster than you expect.
