Gerlach sits at the edge of the Black Rock Desert, and while most people passing through are headed to the playa, the climbing around here is worth a dedicated trip. The area's four listed routes and problems span bouldering and roped climbing, with spots like Pygmy Cave and Unknown V3 representing the bouldering side of things, and Day Trippin rounding out the sport or trad options. The Pyramid Lake Area adds a broader climbing zone within reach of Gerlach, giving you more options if you're spending multiple days out here. This is high desert climbing — exposed, often windy, and subject to big temperature swings between morning and afternoon. The rock tends to be volcanic in character, which means sharp edges and textured holds, but also surfaces that can be unpredictably brittle in places. With only four active listings in the area, this isn't a destination you visit for volume. You come because you want solitude, unusual terrain, and the kind of climbing that doesn't feel like a crowded sport crag. If you're driving up from Reno, budget about 90 minutes and plan to be self-sufficient — Gerlach has very limited services and no dedicated climbing shop.

For the bouldering areas, bring a crash pad, plenty of water, and sun protection — shade is scarce in this desert environment. The volcanic rock can be rough on skin, so tape is worth having. Cell service around Gerlach is unreliable, so download offline maps and let someone know your plans before heading out.
The Pyramid Lake Area falls within the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe's jurisdiction, and tribal land typically requires a recreation permit for access. Check directly with the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe before visiting that area. For the other listed spots near Gerlach, verify current access status through the Bureau of Land Management's Winnemucca District, which manages much of the surrounding public land.
Gerlach has a small general store and a gas station, but no climbing-specific gear or equipment rentals. The nearest city with a full outdoor retailer is Reno, roughly 110 miles south. Bring everything you need before leaving town, including extra water — there are no reliable water sources at the climbing areas themselves.
