The area's defining characteristic is sandstone — softer, more featured, and requiring a different touch than the granite most Colorado climbers cut their teeth on. Hummingbird Rock is the main climbing area in the immediate vicinity, and the routes there reflect the local geology honestly: textured faces, pockets, and the occasional ledgy break. Routes like Cactus Butt and It's Just Sandstone tell you something useful before you even pull on your shoes — expect desert-adjacent conditions, expect the rock to behave like sandstone, and expect a scene that's low-key compared to Shelf Road or Eldorado Canyon. The total number of developed routes is modest, which makes Beulah better suited to a focused half-day or a warm-up stop than a multi-day climbing trip on its own. That said, the relative solitude and easy access from Pueblo make it worth knowing about, especially during shoulder seasons when the bigger areas are either baked out or iced over.
The rock is sandstone, as the route name It's Just Sandstone makes pretty clear. Sandstone tends to be more fragile when wet, so avoid climbing on it for at least a day or two after rain. It also polishes differently than granite, so expect friction moves to feel less reliable and pockets and edges to be your friends.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. Summer afternoons get hot at lower-elevation sandstone crags, and the rock can be uncomfortably warm by midday from June through August. Winter is possible on clear days since Beulah sits lower than many Front Range areas, but check conditions after any storm before making the drive.

It's a reasonable place to practice movement on sandstone if you already have basic skills, but if you're just starting out, pairing this stop with instruction or a more developed crag nearby would serve you better.
A standard sport or trad rack depending on the route, along with a 60-meter rope, should cover most situations at a sandstone crag of this type. Bring more water than you think you need, especially in warmer months — there are no reliable water sources at the crag itself.
