Steens Mountain Wilderness Area

Steens Mountain Wilderness Area encompasses 174,228 acres of remote, high-desert backcountry in southeastern Oregon, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as federally protected Wilderness. The landscape is characterized by rugged terrain, deep canyons, and sparse vegetation typical of the high-desert environment. This is primitive backcountry where motorized travel, mechanical equipment, and developed infrastructure have no place.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore this wilderness. Visitors should expect solitude and self-sufficiency—water sources are limited, trails are often unmarked or faint, and you'll encounter few other people. The wilderness demands careful route-finding and solid backcountry skills. All travel must be non-motorized; pack animals are permitted but motors and mountain bikes are not.

Wilderness rules are strict and non-negotiable. Leave No Trace principles apply: camp away from water sources, pack out all waste, and minimize your footprint. Access is typically from late spring through early fall, as snow and harsh weather limit winter travel. Be prepared for extreme temperature swings, limited water, and exposed terrain. This is not a place for casual day-hiking; it rewards experienced backcountry travelers willing to travel light, move quietly, and leave no trace.
