Soda Mountain Wilderness Area

Soda Mountain Wilderness Area spans nearly 25,000 acres in Oregon under Bureau of Land Management stewardship as a federally designated Wilderness. The landscape is primitive backcountry—a roadless, motorized-access-free zone where the terrain and vegetation shape every mile on foot.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary pursuits here. Visitors come for solitude and a genuine wilderness experience, away from maintained trails and developed infrastructure. The area enforces strict wilderness rules: no motorized vehicles, no mechanized travel, and no roads. All use must be non-motorized and self-propelled.

Leave No Trace principles are not optional guidance—they are the operating standard in federally protected Wilderness. Pack out everything you pack in, camp below timberline where allowed, and treat water sources with care. Access is limited to foot traffic, and the remoteness means you need solid backcountry skills and preparation before entering. Seasonal snow and weather will dictate your window; spring mud and winter snow close routes that are passable in late summer and early fall.
