About Sawtooth Wilderness

Sawtooth Wilderness spans over 217,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in central Idaho, offering a remote landscape shaped by alpine terrain and pristine water. This is true wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack deep into undeveloped country, where solitude and self-reliance are the defining features of the experience.

Recreation centers on foot travel and backcountry camping. The wilderness welcomes hiking and backpacking, with access typically beginning from trailheads on the periphery. Fishing is also possible in alpine lakes and streams. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles and respect the non-motorized character of the area—this means no mountain bikes, no stock except on designated routes, and no development.

Access is seasonal. The high-alpine character means summer (roughly June through September) offers the most reliable travel conditions, though shoulder seasons in May and October may be passable depending on snow melt and weather. Winter travel is possible for skilled parties, but snow and cold make conditions hazardous from December through March. Plan for self-sufficiency: the Forest Service manages this land, but services and support are minimal once you enter.
