Santa Lucia Wilderness Area

Santa Lucia Wilderness Area spans 2,025 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive terrain where motorized travel, mechanized equipment, and built infrastructure are prohibited—you'll travel on foot or horseback only, following established routes through undeveloped landscape.

The wilderness offers hiking and backpacking for those seeking solitude and a genuine backcountry experience. Access is non-motorized, which means trailheads may be remote and require substantial effort to reach. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp only in designated areas where permitted, use no-trace fire practices, and respect the absence of services or maintained amenities.

Season and conditions vary with elevation and weather; spring and fall typically offer the most stable access, while winter can bring impassable terrain. Come prepared with maps, water, and self-sufficiency—this is true wilderness, not a day-use park.
