San Gorgonio Wilderness Area

San Gorgonio Wilderness Area spans over 54,700 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive, non-motorized terrain where foot traffic and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the landscape. The wilderness preserves a remote setting for hiking and backpacking, offering solitude and the opportunity to travel on foot through undeveloped country far from roads and mechanical access.

Visiting means accepting wilderness rules: no motorized vehicles, no mechanized travel, and no roads within the area. Leave No Trace principles are essential—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel in a way that leaves no trace of your passage. Access typically occurs from trailheads on the periphery; always check current conditions and obtain required permits or passes before heading out. Spring through fall offers the most reliable visiting windows, though snow and weather in winter months can make the terrain hazardous or impassable.
