About Round Island Wilderness

Round Island Wilderness is a 375-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in Michigan managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry where motors, mechanized travel, and roads are prohibited—the rules exist to preserve the landscape and your solitude. Visiting means embracing Leave No Trace ethics: pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel on foot or by non-motorized means only.

Access and seasonal timing matter here. The remote location and northern Michigan climate mean summer and early fall offer the most reliable conditions for backpacking and hiking. Winter can be severe, and shoulder seasons bring mud and unpredictable weather. Plan accordingly, respect the wilderness designation, and come prepared for genuine isolation.
