Roaring River Wilderness

Roaring River Wilderness is a 36,548-acre federally protected wilderness area in Oregon managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking through primitive terrain where motorized travel, mechanical equipment, and developed roads are prohibited. This is genuine wilderness—expect solitude, self-reliance, and the need to follow Leave No Trace principles throughout your visit.

Access requires foot travel only. The wilderness is most accessible during warmer months when snow has melted and trails are passable, though seasonal conditions vary by elevation and exposure. Plan ahead: obtain required permits or passes where applicable, carry topographic maps and a compass (or GPS), and be prepared for weather changes and self-rescue. Water sources are present but should be treated before drinking. This is a place to disconnect from mechanized recreation and commit to minimal-impact camping and hiking.
