Owyhee River Wilderness Area

The Owyhee River Wilderness Area spans over 271,000 acres of remote backcountry in Idaho, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a federally protected Wilderness. This is primitive country where motorized travel, roads, and mechanized equipment are prohibited—a place defined by solitude and self-reliance.

Visitors come here to backpack and hike through undeveloped terrain, experiencing the landscape on foot. The wilderness demands Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly, and respect the non-motorized character that makes the area wild. There are no developed facilities, marked trails, or maintained infrastructure; navigation and route-finding are your responsibility.

Access requires planning and a realistic understanding of what wilderness means. This is not a weekend-hike destination with parking lots and trailheads. Seasons matter—late spring through early fall offers the most reliable conditions, though weather and water availability vary year to year. Winter can be severe and impassable. Start with current conditions reports from the BLM, and bring detailed maps and backcountry experience.
