About Mountain Lakes Wilderness

Mountain Lakes Wilderness is a 23,038-acre federally protected wilderness area in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. It protects a primitive backcountry landscape where motorized travel, mechanical equipment, and roads are prohibited. Visitors come here to hike, backpack, and experience genuine solitude away from development.

The wilderness operates under strict non-motorized rules—this means foot travel only, no mountain bikes, no vehicles, and no chainsaws or other mechanized tools. Leave No Trace principles are essential: pack out everything you pack in, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and respect the landscape's fragility. Access typically follows established foot trails from surrounding national forest lands. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable hiking window, though snow can linger into early summer and return by late fall. Check with the Forest Service for current trail conditions and any seasonal closures before you go.
