Mount Thielsen Wilderness

Mount Thielsen Wilderness encompasses 55,127 acres of federally protected backcountry in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive terrain where motorized travel, mechanized equipment, and roads are prohibited—visitors must travel on foot or horseback only. The wilderness offers backcountry hiking and backpacking for those seeking solitude and non-motorized recreation in undeveloped forest and alpine country.

Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and entering on foot or by pack animal. The wilderness rules are strict: no motors, no mountain bikes, no mechanized tools. Leave No Trace principles apply throughout—camp away from water sources, pack out all waste, and minimize impact on the landscape. Summer and early fall are the primary seasons; snow and high water in winter and spring limit access and increase hazard. Plan for self-sufficiency; there are no services, facilities, or maintained infrastructure inside the wilderness boundary.
