About Mount Jefferson Wilderness

Mount Jefferson Wilderness is a 109,099-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. It preserves a primitive backcountry landscape where motorized travel, mechanized equipment, and roads are prohibited. Visitors come here to experience true solitude through hiking and backpacking on foot, carrying all gear and supplies without the aid of motors or machines.

Access is foot-traffic only. You'll navigate by trail and map, camp in designated or dispersed sites depending on Forest Service rules, and pack out everything you pack in—the core principle of Leave No Trace wilderness ethics. Snow and weather make travel difficult in winter and early spring; the accessible season typically runs from late spring through early fall. Plan for self-sufficiency: no lodging, supplies, or services exist within the wilderness boundary.
