About Lower White River Wilderness Area

Lower White River Wilderness Area is a 1,124-acre federally protected wilderness in Oregon managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This primitive backcountry preserves a landscape where motorized travel, mechanical equipment, and developed infrastructure are prohibited—visitors travel on foot only, following Leave No Trace principles to protect the land's natural character.

The wilderness offers hiking and backpacking opportunities for those seeking solitude and untrammeled backcountry experience. Access is non-motorized and self-powered; there are no roads or maintained facilities within the wilderness boundary. Visitors should expect a remote, undeveloped setting with minimal trail infrastructure and come prepared for genuine backcountry conditions.

Visit during the warmest months when snow has melted and conditions are most stable. Spring and fall are accessible but may bring variable weather and occasional snow at higher elevations. Winter travel is hazardous and generally not feasible without specialized winter backcountry skills and equipment.
