About Key West National Wildlife Refuge.Wilderness Area

Key West National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area encompasses 2,644 acres of federally protected backcountry in Florida, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a primitive, non-motorized landscape. The refuge protects sensitive coastal and marine habitats characteristic of the Keys, offering visitors a chance to experience undeveloped wilderness in a region otherwise heavily developed.

Recreation here is confined to non-motorized pursuits: hiking, kayaking, and wildlife viewing are the primary ways to explore the area. Because this is a designated Wilderness, all mechanized travel—including mountain bikes and motorboats—is prohibited. Access is limited and requires planning; there are no roads into the core wilderness, and entry typically depends on water access or foot travel from nearby public lands.

Visitors must follow strict Leave No Trace principles and wilderness regulations. Carry out all waste, camp only in designated areas if permitted, and respect seasonal closures designed to protect nesting birds and sensitive wildlife. The subtropical Florida Keys climate means summer brings heat and humidity, while hurricane season (June through November) can affect access and conditions. Before visiting, check current conditions and access points with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as logistics for reaching this remote refuge differ significantly from typical inland wilderness areas.
