Hell Hole Bay Wilderness

Hell Hole Bay Wilderness is a 2,122-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in South Carolina, managed by the Forest Service. The area preserves primitive backcountry open only to non-motorized travel—no roads, motors, or mechanized equipment are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through undeveloped terrain, seeking the solitude and self-reliance that define true wilderness experience.

Wilderness travel here means Leave No Trace principles are not optional guidelines but essential practice. You'll encounter no developed infrastructure, trail maintenance, or services; navigation and camp-craft skills matter. Access is foot-traffic only, and the landscape remains intentionally rough and unimproved.
