Gearhart Mountain Wilderness

Gearhart Mountain Wilderness spans over 22,600 acres of federally protected backcountry in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service as a primitive non-motorized landscape. The area offers hiking and backpacking through remote terrain where you'll experience genuine solitude and untracked wilderness character—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted.

Visiting means embracing wilderness rules: you travel on foot, pack out everything you pack in, and follow Leave No Trace principles throughout. This is genuine backcountry with no facilities or services, so you'll need to be self-sufficient. Access depends on trailheads outside the wilderness boundary; check with the Forest Service for current conditions and seasonal closures before you go. Snow and weather can restrict access in winter and early spring, while summer and early fall offer the most reliable visiting windows.
