Gates Of The Mountains Wilderness

Gates of the Mountains Wilderness is a 28,460-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Montana managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized landscape where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

This is true wilderness: no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must travel on foot, and the area operates under strict Leave No Trace principles. You'll need to pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly away from water sources, and respect the land as a roadless sanctuary.

Access is by trail from trailheads outside the designated Wilderness boundary. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable conditions; winter weather can be severe and hazardous.
