El Toro Wilderness

El Toro Wilderness is a 10,361-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Puerto Rico, managed by the Forest Service. The area preserves primitive backcountry where visitors experience the island's natural landscape on foot, away from roads and motorized access.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore this wilderness. Like all federally designated Wilderness Areas, El Toro operates under strict non-motorized, non-mechanized rules — no vehicles, mountain bikes, or power equipment are permitted. Visitors should expect true backcountry conditions and come prepared to follow Leave No Trace principles, packing out all waste and minimizing impact on the land.

Access to El Toro requires self-propelled travel and wilderness-appropriate skills. The area's tropical location means weather and seasonal conditions should inform your planning.
