About Domeland Wilderness Area

Domeland Wilderness Area is a 40,096-acre federally protected wilderness in California managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It offers remote backcountry hiking and backpacking for visitors seeking solitude and primitive conditions in undeveloped terrain.

As a designated Wilderness Area, Domeland is closed to motorized and mechanized travel. No roads, mountain bikes, or vehicles of any kind are permitted. All travel is foot-based, and the landscape remains in its natural state with minimal built infrastructure. This is strict backcountry—expect to navigate by map and compass, pack out all waste, and follow Leave No Trace principles throughout your visit.

Access is on foot only, typically from trailheads on the periphery. Spring through fall are the most reliable seasons for backcountry travel here. Winter conditions can make access difficult or impossible depending on elevation and snow. Plan ahead, bring adequate water and supplies, and be prepared for true wilderness conditions with no services or facilities inside the area boundaries.
