About Deseret Peak Wilderness

Deseret Peak Wilderness is a 25,079-acre federally protected wilderness area in Utah, managed by the Forest Service. It offers remote backcountry terrain suited to hikers and backpackers seeking solitude and primitive conditions away from developed infrastructure.

The wilderness is closed to all motorized and mechanized travel—no vehicles, mountain bikes, or similar equipment are permitted. Travel is on foot or horseback only. This protection preserves the area's wild character and ensures that visitors experience genuine backcountry conditions. Like all federally designated wilderness, Deseret Peak operates under Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp only in designated or low-impact sites, and travel on established routes where possible to minimize soil disturbance.

Access typically begins from trailheads on the periphery of the wilderness boundary, with the hiking season running strongest from late spring through early fall. Winter snow can close high-elevation routes and access roads, making summer and early autumn the most reliable windows for travel. Plan ahead: wilderness permits may be required, and water sources and shelter availability vary by route and season.
